   Philosopher
Gilbert Ryle was an exponent of analytic behaviourism, the theory that statements about mind can be translated, without loss of meaning, into statements about actual or possible behaviours. He held that many philosophical misconceptions have their basis in ‘category mistakes’, whereby objects and attributes relating to one logical category are misrepresented as belonging to another. In his most influential work, The Concept of Mind (1949), Ryle delivered an assault on Cartesian dualism. Descartes’s view that mind and body are absolutely distinct (disparagingly described by Ryle as the doctrine of ‘the ghost in the machine’) constitutes a classic example of a category mistake. Attributes such as consciousness, which are subsumed erroneously under the category of mind, are, on analysis, reducible to behaviour.
